Hello and welcome to the Photoshop 5 Bible CD-ROM. Glad to see you made it.
This CD contains an extensive collection of photographs, artwork, and plug-ins that you can use with Photoshop. The CD works with both Macs and PCs, regardless of which version of this book you have purchased. On the Mac, you need to be running System 7.5 or later. On the PC, you need Windows 95, 98, or NT4 or later. (The CD will not function properly under Windows 3.1 or earlier.)
To view the photographs and artwork contained on the CD, you need Photoshop or some other image editor. You also need Photoshop to take advantage of the filters contained in the Plug-Ins folder. The remaining files -- including artist biographies and documentation -- are provided as text, PDF, or HTML files. This CD does not contain any of the software required to read these formats. However, this shouldn't be a problem because most computers come preconfigured with the software you need.
This CD contains the following folders:
* Artist Gallery: This folder contains nearly 150MB of original imagery from 16 of the finest artists working with Photoshop today. The artists cover a broad range of styles and techniques, and you can get some great ideas from looking at their work. Note that these images belong to the artists who created them. Feel free to view them on screen, but under no condition should you integrate an image from this folder into your own work, post an image on the Internet, or in any way pass it off as your own. Thanks.
* Digital Cameras: Over the years, I've had the opportunity to use virtually every midrange digital camera that's come down the pike. I get a lot of e-mail about cameras, so I figured I'd help you make your own decision by making it possible for you to judge the snapshots for yourself. This folder contains hundreds of images shot with 27 cameras from 14 different vendors. This time, I'm the copyright holder. I don't really care what you do with the photos in the privacy of your own home, but please don't reproduce them or post them on-line.
* DigitalThink: This folder contains a sample lesson from DigitalThink, a Web-based training company that offers interactive classes in Photoshop and Illustrator written by yours truly. You can check out their entire catalog of courses at www.digitalthink.com.
* PC MacLAN: Available to Windows users only, this folder contains a demonstration version of Miramar's PC MacLAN, the easiest solution for networking Macintosh and PC computers. This is the software I use in my office, so I can attest that it works great. (If you're viewing the CD on a Mac, you will not see this folder.)
* Plug-ins: This folder contains a wide range of Photoshop plug-ins from scads of different vendors, including such luminaries as Alien Skin, Andromeda, and Extensis. Most of the plug-ins are limited demonstration versions that give you ample chance to try out the software before you buy. But many of the vendors have graciously shared one or two fully functional plug-ins that are exclusive to this book. You can use them right off the CD without paying another dime. I can proudly say that I know of no other Photoshop book that includes so much free software, and of such excellent caliber.
* Stock Photos: This folder contains a total of 48 high-resolution images from the titans of digital stock photography, PhotoDisc and Digital Stock. Not coincidentally, every one of these photographs is featured in the figures in this book, so you can follow along with the exercises and techniques exactly as I describe them.
